The UH 145 (military version of EUROCOPTER’S EC 145) has been selected by the US Army for LUH (Light Utility Helicopter) equipment program. The contract will supply 352 aircraft. The UH145 will replace the UH1H Huey and the OH58 Kiowa. The first UH-145 was delivered to the US Army on Monday 11th December 2006. Traditionally they name their helicopters after Indian tribes. The new aircraft, whose military designation is UH-72A, was named “Lakota” after a Sioux tribe. The EC 145 is a twin-engine multi-purpose helicopter belonging to the 3-4 tonne class, and is able to accommodate up to 10 seats for the pilot(s) and passengers. Compared to other helicopters in its class, the EC 145 offers a much larger cabin, with excellent outside vision for pilot, crew or passengers, a roomy cabin with no partitions or protrusions, an unrivaled side loading (no door post), a rear loading capability and a flat floor all over the cabin area. A wide range of optional equipment can be fitted simultaneously in most cases. Thanks to its multifunctional configuration, the UH-72A is ready to carry out all kinds of missions, for example rescue, transport, area surveillance, public service, etc. The first three UH-72A aircraft will be sent to Fort Irwin in California, where the Army will put the aircraft into operational service. Spread over the whole territory, the UH-72As are firstly destined to equip the helicopter units of the National Guard for Homeland Security, medical evacuation, passenger transport, logistics and missions related to drug trafficking.
