The twin engine MD 550 Mystère Delta of GAMD met the needs of the French Air Force light interceptor plane programme of January 1953. Then following a change of pol icy, the Air Force envisaged the construction of a multi-purpose fighter aircraft. Dassault proposed the single engine Mirage III of which prototype 001 first took off on 17th November 1956, piloted by Roland Glavany. The 2nd Fighter Squadron was selected to fly the Mirage IIIC, a Mach 2 all-weather interceptor capable of support missions, with the “Cigognes” Squadron receiving its first aircraft in July 1961. The last aircrafts in service in the French Air Force were withdrawn in June 1988. The Mirage IIIC was also commissioned by South Africa, Israel and Switzerland.
